Welcome to Hilary's Therapies

My name is Hilary Gurner and I qualified with the College of Bowen Studies in September 2018. Bowen Therapy is a light touch soft tissue therapy - still relatively unknown in the UK, although more people are experiencing it now!

The Magic of Bowen

Bowen Therapy is like no other therapy – where else can you be relaxed and re-energised all in the same session? Click here for a quick video introduction to Bowen Therapy.

I’ve tried to base my Clinic on chronic pain as having suffered this myself I know the damaging effects pain can have on your physical fitness, your self esteem, your mental & emotional wellbeing and your happiness. It’s very difficult to feel happy if you are in chronic pain all the time. Pain can affect your work, your relationships and just about every other aspect of your life! I find most people come to Bowen as a ‘last resort’ – they have tried ‘everything’ else from massage to physiotherapy, from acupuncture to osteopathy & chiropractic techniques, but Bowen is worth far more than this and should be one of your first ports of call. I have many Clients travelling to me for The Bowen Technique from Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Brandon, Cambridge and Thetford. Successful treatments recently include improving symptoms of chronic pain - particularly back pain/sciatica, headaches, sports injury, arthritis, IBS and plantar fasciitis. I also see people with hay fever / asthma, anxiety & stress related disorders and sleep issues. Shoulder, hip & knee pain also usually respond well to Bowen Therapy. I am very pleased to be working with the Cambridge, Ely & Bury St Edmunds Group of the Multiple Sclerosis Society for the benefit of their members who are now enjoying Bowen Therapy with me!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Bowen treatment take?

The first session will take approximately 1hr but this does depend on the Client. Subsequent treatments will take approximately 45 minutes.

How long does a Reiki session take?

The first session will take approximately 1hr but this does depend on the Client. Subsequent treatments will take approximately 45 minutes.

Who can have Bowen?

Bowen is so gentle that it is suitable for all ages. There are no contra-indications making it a safe treatment for all - young and old, healthy and sick.

How much will it cost?

The cost for all Bowen treatments is £50. Please see my 'Prices' page for full details on pricing.

The cost for Reiki treatments are £40 for up to half an hour and £50 for up to an hour.

How do I book a treatment?

You can just click here to email me. Alternatively you can use the contact form on the side of each page, or contact me via my Bowen Facebook page at facebook.com/bowenhands or for Gut Health through my facebook page facebook.com/suffolkwellnesscoaching.

You can telephone me on 07984 309744. Please note I may be working, so please be prepared to leave me a message and I will phone you back once I'm free.

How many treatments will I need?

For the Bowen Technique the majority of people respond with 3 to 4 treatments and then may just need 'top ups' or 'maintenance' treatments at intervals to suit individual requirements. For Reiki there is no 'set amount' of treatments, therefore many people just book a treatment when they feel they need one.

Do I have to remove clothing?

No need to remove clothing as the treatment can be given successfully through light clothing - please do not wear denim, lycra or any other heavy fabrics. If I am unable to work through your clothing, then it may be required to remove clothing down to underwear, but it is ultimately the Client's choice. There is no need to remove any clothing for Reiki.

What can I expect after a Bowen treatment?

Changes can be noted in the body for up to 7 days after a treatment, so improvements may not be noticed immediately. Responses to Bowen treatment may include hot & cold flushes, headaches, emotional releases, thirst, tiredness and body aches & pains. These are all positive signs that the healing process has started. Most people do not experience all of these symptoms (if any), and they will clear after a few days.

Why is it best to avoid other therapies whilst having Bowen Therapy?

Bowen is very gentle and it is recommended to avoid other therapies so as not to overload the body with information or give the body differing therapeutic information to deal with at the same time.

Please Note:

The Bowen Technique is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment. If you are unsure, or have any concerns please consult your GP for advice first.

How do I pay for treatment?

Payments for all treatments can be taken by card - sorry AMEX not accepted, in cash at time of treatment (cash not currently accepted due to Covid-19 pandemic) or by online bank transfer (prior to first treatment for new Clients). Please request my bank details prior to your appointment if you wish to pay by these methods.

How do I know if I am deficient in Vitamin B12?

You can request a blood test from your GP which will show your levels. However, most people (certainly over 60's) are deficient and could do with a boost. If you are vegan or vegetarian you will be deficient, if you have a lot of stress you won't be absorbing the B12 from your food, so could do with a boost.

Is having too much Vitamin B12 bad for you - or can you overdose on it?

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin. In the unlikely event that you do not need a boost and you have an injection the excess will come out of your body in your urine. Due to it being water soluble, you cannot overdose on B12.

Which foods provide a source of Vitamin B12?

Red meat (animals red blood cells passed onto us), salmon, fortified cereals - although watch the sugar content of these so called 'healthy' cereals, fortified supplements, marmite and yeast substances, eggs.

What are the symptoms of low Vitamin B12?

Pernicious anaemia, pale skin, low mood, poor concentration / memory, lack of energy / stamina, brain fog, depression, Seasonal Affected Disorder, lethargy, pins and needles, thin, ridged, brittle nails, hallucinations, yeast infections, anxiety, mouth ulcers, stomach bloating, hormonal imbalances, night terrors, always feeling cold, loss of appetite, frequent miscarriages, PMS, eczema, tinnitus and many other 'insignificant' symptoms.
